1.THE ADDRESS IS 226-20 FRANCIS LEWIS BOULEVARD, and it is open around the clock six days a week — closed Shabbos. The visitors' centre beside it is the place to arrive at rather than the cemetery gate. Telephone 718-723-4545.
2.TWO DOORS, AND THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. The first is the men's; the second, which brings you nearer the matzevos, is the women's.
3.WHAT PEOPLE DO INSIDE. The custom is to knock lightly before entering, and not to wear leather shoes in the ohel — slippers are kept there for anyone who arrives in leather. A pan, a written note, is read quietly, torn, and the pieces left on the pile of letters that covers the two kevorim. People leave walking backwards rather than turning their back on the ohel.
4.ABOUT FIFTY THOUSAND PEOPLE A YEAR COME HERE, from every part of Jewish life and from outside it. On 3 Tammuz, the Rebbe's yahrzeit, the numbers are of a different order altogether and the streets around are closed to traffic. If you want quiet, come on any other day — at three in the morning it is still open.
