Josefov, around the Altneuschul
The old Jewish town, and now also one of the busiest tourist districts in Europe — both things are true at once. What makes it worth staying in is that the Altneuschul still has daily minyanim, the kosher restaurants are in the same few streets, and the Maharal's kever is a few minutes' walk. It is also five minutes from the Old Town Square, so the sightseeing needs no travel at all.

Completed in 1270 and davening ever since — the oldest active shul in Europe, and where the Maharal was rov.

- Still a functioning shul with daily minyanim, not a museum piece. Come to daven and the visit is a different thing entirely.
- The Maharal's kever is in the Old Jewish Cemetery a few streets away, and is the reason many people come to Prague at all.

Charles Bridge
The 14th-century stone bridge over the Vltava, lined with baroque statues, between the Old Town and the castle.
Karlův most, Prague
- Free and always open. Before seven in the morning it is empty; by ten it is a crowd.
- One thing to know before you stand there: the gilded Hebrew letters around the crucifix at the centre were paid for in 1696 by a fine imposed on a Jew accused of blaspheming it. A plaque in Czech, English and Hebrew was added in 2000 explaining that the words were placed there as a humiliation. Many people cross the bridge and do not stop at that statue.

The Astronomical Clock and the Old Town Square
A working clock of 1410 on the Old Town Hall that still shows the sun, the moon and the zodiac.
