Bobowa — Ohel of the first Bobover Rebbe
Ohel at the top of the Jewish cemetery, ulica Wichrowa, about 800 metres south-west of the rynek, Bobowa, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland
- THE OHEL IS AT THE TOP OF THE HILL. The cemetery is on ulica Wichrowa, about eight hundred metres south-west of the rynek, an irregular plot of roughly three quarters of a hectare opened in the seventeen hundreds. Walk up; the ohel over the first Bobover Rebbe is at the crown of it and was rebuilt in 1945.
- IT IS TIDIED AND FENCED and it has a caretaker — recorded as Tadeusz Nowak. Chassidim come here from around the world, so it is a ground that is used rather than one that has to be found.
- THE KEDUSHAS TZION IS NOT BURIED HERE, and people assume he is. Reb Ben Zion Halberstam, the second Bobover Rebbe, was shot in the Yanover forest outside Lwów on 4 Av 5701 — the twenty-eighth of July 1941 — together with his son and three of his sons-in-law, among some twenty thousand murdered there that day. He has no individual kever. Bobowa is where he led, not where he lies.
- SURVEYED COORDINATES. The map point on this listing is the cemetery itself, measured on the ground by the ESJF survey — not a town centre. Where a kever is inside an ohel it will still need finding once you are through the gate, but the gate is now something you can navigate to.
