אוהל האדמו״ר הראשון מבאבוב

Bobowa — Ohel of the first Bobover Rebbe

Ohel at the top of the Jewish cemetery, ulica Wichrowa, about 800 metres south-west of the rynek, Bobowa, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland

  • THE OHEL IS AT THE TOP OF THE HILL. The cemetery is on ulica Wichrowa, about eight hundred metres south-west of the rynek, an irregular plot of roughly three quarters of a hectare opened in the seventeen hundreds. Walk up; the ohel over the first Bobover Rebbe is at the crown of it and was rebuilt in 1945.
  • IT IS TIDIED AND FENCED and it has a caretaker — recorded as Tadeusz Nowak. Chassidim come here from around the world, so it is a ground that is used rather than one that has to be found.
  • THE KEDUSHAS TZION IS NOT BURIED HERE, and people assume he is. Reb Ben Zion Halberstam, the second Bobover Rebbe, was shot in the Yanover forest outside Lwów on 4 Av 5701 — the twenty-eighth of July 1941 — together with his son and three of his sons-in-law, among some twenty thousand murdered there that day. He has no individual kever. Bobowa is where he led, not where he lies.
  • SURVEYED COORDINATES. The map point on this listing is the cemetery itself, measured on the ground by the ESJF survey — not a town centre. Where a kever is inside an ohel it will still need finding once you are through the gate, but the gate is now something you can navigate to.

The first Bobover Rebbe

1 Av · 5665 / 1905

1847–1905. Founder of the Bobov chassidic dynasty and a scion of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz. The ohel rebuilt over him in 1945 stands at the top of the cemetery hill. His son Reb Ben Zion, the Kedushas Tzion, who made Bobowa one of the great chassidishe centres between the wars, was murdered outside Lwów in 1941 and is not buried here.
