בוטשאַטש — אוהל רבי אברהם דוד ווארמאן, בעל אשל אברהם
Buchach — Ohel of Reb Avraham David Wahrman, the Eshel Avraham
Jewish cemetery, Torhova Street, Buchach, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine
- This is one of the better sites in Galicia. The ESJF surveyed the cemetery and fenced it in November 2018 — a metal fence on a concrete foundation along the Torhova Street side and mesh fencing on the north and east — and the survey records the ohel and tziyun of Reb Avraham David Wahrman standing on the site.
- It is a big place: roughly three hectares running down toward the Strypa, with around two thousand gravestones, the oldest from the 1590s. Finding one ohel among them without help takes time.
- The cemetery also holds the tziyunim of Reb Yisrael Aryeh Leib and of Rebbetzin Eydil Sarah Rachel, and Buchach itself is the town of S.Y. Agnon and of Simon Wiesenthal's family, so groups often build a longer stop here.
- Arrange a local guide or ask the Buchach museum to walk you to the ohel, and confirm the exact spot on the ground.
- SURVEYED COORDINATES. The map point on this listing is the cemetery itself, measured on the ground by the ESJF survey — not a town centre. Where a kever is inside an ohel it will still need finding once you are through the gate, but the gate is now something you can navigate to.
