Kalisz — Ohel of Reb Yechezkel Lipszyc in the New Jewish Cemetery
New Jewish cemetery, ul. Podmiejska 21, Kalisz, Greater Poland Voivodeship (Wielkopolskie), Poland
- This is one of the few sites in this region where the ohel actually came through the war standing. It is still there, and Yidden who come to Kalisz daven at it and leave kvitlach.
- Go to the NEW cemetery, ul. Podmiejska 21, on the plot the kehillah bought in 1920 between today's Widok and Podmiejska streets. Kalisz also has an older Jewish cemetery elsewhere in the city — the Rav's ohel is not there.
- He asked in his will to be buried on this plot, and his levaya in March 1932 is what opened the new cemetery for use; by 1939 about 3,000 people had been buried here.
- Some listings give the address as Podmiejska 23 rather than 21, and the gate is not always open — check the number and arrange access locally before you travel.
- SURVEYED COORDINATES. The map point on this listing is the cemetery itself, measured on the ground by the ESJF survey — not a town centre. Where a kever is inside an ohel it will still need finding once you are through the gate, but the gate is now something you can navigate to.
