אוהל ר׳ אריה לייבוש הלברשטאם — טארנא
Tarnów — Ohel of Reb Aryeh Leibush Halberstam
Jewish cemetery, ul. Szpitalna, Tarnów, Tarnów County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland
- The cemetery was devastated under the German occupation and what you walk through today is the result of a long restoration; it is one of the oldest and largest Jewish cemeteries in southern Poland, so finding one ohel among the stones takes time and patience.
- Be clear who is buried here: this is Reb Aryeh Leibush Halberstam, a Sanz-Shinov rebbe who lived and led in Tarnów — he is not the Tarnower Rav, R' Meir Aryeh Leibush Horowitz of the Divrei Meir, who was the town's official rav and is a different man with a different grave in this same town.
- The ohel stands on the east side of the grounds, walled in concrete; the cemetery is walled along ul. Szpitalna.
- Ask at the gate or with someone local to be shown the right ohel before you daven — the Halberstam given names repeat across this family and more than one Aryeh Leibush Halberstam is honoured elsewhere.
- SURVEYED COORDINATES. The map point on this listing is the cemetery itself, measured on the ground by the ESJF survey — not a town centre. Where a kever is inside an ohel it will still need finding once you are through the gate, but the gate is now something you can navigate to.
